As an important partner on an interdisciplinary treatment team the Car Seat Education Consultant provides education to patients in the inpatient and emergency department setting. The Car Seat Education Consultant makes assessments in person, providing education on car seats and roadway safety while demonstrating excellence, compassion, partnership, and integrity as part of the organization’s core values.
The Car Seat Education Consultant is knowledgeable of current child passenger safety best practices, current position statement(s) from the American Academy of Pediatrics, crash dynamics, basic infant and child anatomy and physiology.
This includes but is not limited to:
Best practices related to car seat selection, direction, and location, basic and complicated installation, harnessing problem solving techniques, next-steps, turn-around time, after-market products and safety in and around cars.
Demonstrated competency in child passenger safety with various car seat types, seat belt types, LATCH, alternative approved locking mechanisms or methods.
Awareness of emerging car seat technology, various seat types, and how to obtain the most current information.
This position requires knowledge of Minnesota seat belt and child passenger safety laws as well as other laws that promote roadway safety. This position requires you to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of patient care staff, non-patient care staff, patients, and families, general public and external agencies. You will discuss, collaborate and consult with health care team members, making appropriate referrals and complete documentation in an accurate and timely manner. The Car Seat Education Consultant performs related duties as assigned.
Education: Completion of a four-year degree.
Completion of a two-year degree in a healthcare related field or education field with two years of work experience in the field of study.
Experience: A minimum of six months experience as a child passenger safety technician or instructor providing community-based and/or clinical based car seat education.
Licensure/ Registration/ Certification: Current certification as a SafeKids Child Passenger Safety Technician.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Experience: Experience in education and/or experience in patient care.
Licensure/ Registration/ Certification: Current certification as a SafeKids Child Passenger Safety Instructor.
Completion of training in special needs (Safe Travel for All Children).
