Nature of Work Under the direction of the Shift Foreman, the Assistant Operator is responsible for the safe and proper operation of the Silver Lake Plant (SLP) steam boilers, the Westside Energy Station (WES) reciprocating engines, Cascade Creek (CC) gas turbines and associated auxiliaries but is also training for, and on occasion assumes on a temporary relief basis, the responsibilities of the Plant Operator. The majority of the operating shift is split between SLP and WES while remotely operating the various electrical generation units and performing routine inspections of these sites and equipment. Occasional off-site work related to the Cascade Creek Station, the IBM diesel generators, the Lake Zumbro hydro facility or the Silver Lake dam is also required. Upon hire, individuals will be temporarily assigned to work 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. When training is completed, employees will follow the Twelve-Hour Shift agreement listed in the IBEW Local 949 Collective Bargaining Agreement. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *Operational Responsibilities Guided by a qualified Operator or Shift Foreman, operate all boilers, gas turbines, reciprocating engines and diesel generator along with associated auxiliary equipment. Maximize continuous, safe and efficient operation of generation sites through proper air, fuel, injection water, cooling water, lubrication, and emission reduction equipment adjustments. Perform routine water tests, interpret results and make necessary corrections to the feedwater in Silver Lake Plant and the Water Treatment Building. Comprehend and follow the electrical and steam dispatch requirements set forth by RPU staff, The Energy Authority, MISO, Mayo Clinic, and any other agency with which RPU is associated. Complete violations reports due to equipment malfunctions including probable cause and down time. Participate in complex, coordinated crew evolutions using clear, concise communications. Use verbal skills when communication is face-to-face, radio-based, or via telephone. Utilize professional written communication skills when working with email, training plans, operating procedures, safety programs, etc. Collect and evaluate data for equipment assigned, maintaining complete, accurate and legible computer logs that follow the rules and requirements set by the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor. *Backup Plant Operator Work through the requirements detailed in the RPU Operator Training Plan to satisfactorily complete the modules within the specified time limits. Learn and assume the duties of the Plant Operator on a relief basis. Cooperate with and provide work direction to other employees. Demonstrate a desire to succeed and move ahead in the organization. Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
