Mechanical Supervisor

Role: The Mechanical Supervisor manages the day-to-day operation of a Rail car shop while overseeing a unionized staff to ensure maintenance and repair work is performed safely and efficiently. This role is critical to ensuring the on-time performance of trains and delivering CN’s commitments to customers. The supervisor performs and supervises various tasks related to the efficient utilization of locomotives and rail cars.

Duties and Responsibilities: Critical performance areas include the following but may vary depending on location and circumstances:

  • Safety, compliance and enforcement focused
  • Manages the day-to-day operation of assigned shop or territory and responsible for leading assigned unionized staff to ensure maintenance and repair work on rail cars is performed safely and efficiently
  • Builds, maintains and motivates an effective team
  • Monitor cost of labor, inventory and materials to ensure cost control and asset utilization are implemented
  • Performs efficiency testing that meets or exceeds company expectations of required testing
  • Required to attend and assist in derailments which includes the oversight of the re-railing process, participating in the root cause analysis and damage estimates to ensure all appropriate reports are created
  • Monitors reports to ensure timely repair of bad orders
  • Responsible for developing employees and completing performance evaluations based on company standards and timelines
  • Enforce safe work procedures and policies Working conditions:

  • Shift work which includes: Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays

  • Combination of office and shop work and working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Meet deadlines, interface with senior management
  • Travel for company business, at times without advance notice
  • Respond to unexpected or emergency situations

Minimum requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position.
  • Strong ability to perform well under pressure and in stressful situations and circumstances
  • Must display logistical thinking, critical thinking, multitasking skills, problem solving skills and decision making skills
  • Ability to display strong planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to successfully collaborate in a team environment while prioritizing tasks and instructions
  • Ability to work autonomously and adapt to changing situations
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Must have the ability to stay alert and prepared for unusual conditions or circumstances
  • Demonstrate good teamwork and maintain positive interactions with others
  • Dedication to getting the job done while meeting established standards of quality, safety and client satisfaction Preferences:

  • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment

  • Experience in managing budgets
  • Experience in supervising a unionized workforce
  • Labor relations experience i.e. interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline, etc.
  • United States Operating Rules (USOR) qualified
  • Post-secondary education
  • Basic computer skills The ideal candidate profile:

  • Understand and apply safety standards, policies and procedures, collective agreements as well as Operating Rules. Training: Mechanical Supervisors will go through training of USOR (United States Operating Rules) in Homewood, IL. Training relating to shop operations will be done on the job and facilitated by current Mechanical Supervisors, General Mechanical Supervisors and Senior Mechanical Manager.
