THE MINNESOTA STATE FOREST NURSERY IS LOCATED IN NORTHWEST MINNESOTA IN A VERY RURAL AREA NEAR AKELEY, MINNESOTA.
THESE POSITIONS ARE INTERMITTENT TEMPORARY AND APPLICANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ON CALL AS NEEDED DURING THE PERIOD OF MARCH 15 THROUGH NOVEMBER 15, 2021. HOURS AND DAYS OF WORK ARE WEATHER DEPENDENT AND WILL VARY. BUSIEST MONTHS WILL BE APRIL, MAY AND OCTOBER.
These positions provide manual labor necessary to maintain quality standards in production, handling and shipment of tree seedlings and other vegetative materials.
This posting will be used to fill up to 60 vacancies at this location.
Responsibilities include: *Removing and separating seedlings from seedbeds. *Count and sort seedlings accurately and consistently in bundles depending on given instructions. *Identify, after instruction, acceptable seedlings size and height grade standards and differentiate seedlings with top, shoot and root damage for discard. *Removing weeds from seedbeds and designated areas. *Perform miscellaneous tasks including root pruning, packing, tying, boxing, labeling, etc. *Perform miscellaneous fieldwork tasks such as lifting seedlings directly from field, weeding, planting, seeding.
*Select positions may have driving responsibilities. For those positions candidates must have a valid unrestricted class D driver's license and as part of the background check will be required to pass a driver's license history check.
Most tasks are performed while in a standing position for long periods of time.
Ability to comprehend and follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to withstand exposure to adverse weather and/or environmental conditions.
Basic arithmetic/counting skills.
For select positions with driving requirements, an unrestricted Class D Driver's License will be required. This is a license for a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of seed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting or bending most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
Most tasks are performed while in a standing position for long periods of time. This posting will remain open until all positions are filled.
For positions that require driving responsibilities candidates will need an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record.
